Thinking Away A Painful Past
A SHEFFIELD,England, dad crippled by pain after crushing his hand in an accident at work is thinking himself back to fitness - using the power of hypnotherapy.
Mechanical engineer David Peacock, aged 42, developed excruciating pain which shot up and down both his hands, arms and legs following the accident with a drill.
After months of agony he was eventually diagnosed with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy - a rare and hard-to-recognise condition which sometimes cannot be cured.
Doses of heavy painkillers seemed the only option for David, from Woodhouse, Sheffield, to control the pain.
But then he was referred to Val Ryan, a clinical nurse specialist and trained medical hypnotherapist at the Northern General Hospital's Chronic Pain Clinic.
